OPPAZ assists members with technical training, certification advice and training, and market linkages. OPPAZ aims to provide these technical specialist services so that accessible local and export routes are established to create an opportunity for income generation for the Zambian farmer through organic and fair trade agricultural production and processing. Since 1999, organic vegetables, organic honey and wax, organic essential and indigenous tree oils, organic wild mushrooms and organic fair trade groundnuts have reached the export markets with assistance from OPPAZ. Organic Cotton is currently in process of expansion in Zambia. In 2006 the local market has begun to expand with the opening of two dedicated organic shops in Lusaka and providing opportunities to growers of a large variety of organic field crops and vegetables.
The Project Node emerged from previous discussions with Project Partners, initiated by TEL, e-Brain, Coldreed Training and IICD. It was felt that there is need to form a Project Node with the objective of sharing experiences in a more focused way, sharing knowledge within projects on achievements and challenges and optimizing resources and skills.
The Project Node was launched in June 2006. The Project Node is governed by a Core Team consisting of representatives from OneWorldAfrica, ZARI, TEL, Coldreed Training and e-Brain Forum of Zambia. (These Organizations represent education, livelihoods, capacity building, monitoring and evaluation, ICT4D Network)
