One World Africa - Education Support Network Project

Project description: http://www.iicd.org/projects/zambia-esnet

http://africa.oneworld.net/countryguide/zambia/zambia

Image ESNet started as a pilot project in 2005. It is run by OneWorld Africa, an international non-governmental organisation. Goal is to assist poorly resourced schools by coordinating a collaborative effort to improve the relevancy and quality of locally developed teaching materials. The teaching materials are then shared with schools across Zambia. Initially, around 18 teachers and 800 pupils in nine secondary schools across the country have benefited from skills training sessions and improved teaching materials. This has now grown to 515 teachers and 11,000 students.

6 schools at Copperbelt: (Coordinated by Mpelembe School) - Enhancing the Visual and Presentation of Educational Content (ENEDCO)

Project description: http://www.iicd.org/projects/zambia-enedco

The main objective of the ENEDCO project is to integrate Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) into the classroom. Two examples are the use of powerpoint with photo’s downloaded from the internet to teach about malaria or video’s from science experiments shown at schools without a science laboratory. The users of the project are the teachers who use the visualized teaching materials in their own lessons. Other beneficiaries include schools in the vicinity. An important and integral part of this project is the need to disseminate information to other schools interested in the improved teaching materials. Equally important is the fact that these schools are already engaged in other educational related collaborative initiatives.

National Agricultural Information Services (NAIS) - Strengthening the Agriculture Information Flow and Dissemination System

Project description: http://www.iicd.org/projects/zambia-nais

Farmers are often in need of relevant agricultural information to take informed decisions, but distances to collect this information from providers like the Zambian Agricultural Research Institute (ZARI) are far. The project will improve the gathering and delivering of information through e-mail and internet. A District Resource Information Centre will be established in Kasama (Northern Province, 12 hours from Lusaka) to bring the information closer to the farmers. This project is supported by IICD since 2006 and is run by National Agricultural Information Services (NAIS) a department of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Zambia Agriculture Research Institute (ZARI) - Development of an Effective Information Flow System

Project description: http://www.iicd.org/projects/zambia-zari

http://www.zari.gov.zm/

Image  Small scale farmers in Zambia have a low productivity partly due to lack of access to agricultural information. They have to travel long distances to reach researchers. This pilot project will bring research information closer to the farmer in a way that is relevant for them through an improved information flow between the research institute to the rural research stations through internet and e-mail.  In the pilot project research stations in the rural towns Misamfu, Northern Province and mount Makulu, near Lusaka are included. The Zambia Agriculture Research Institute (ZARI) owns these stations. The project is supported by IICD since 2005.

Chawama Youth Group - ICT Integration Multimedia & Recording

Project description: http://www.iicd.org/projects/zambia-cypro

The award-winning Chawama Youth Project (CYPRO) helps young people in the township of Chawama. The centre offers ‘life skills’ courses in subjects such as Auto Mechanics, Tailoring, Carpentry, and ICT to improve the young people’s chances of finding work. IICD support the project since 2006. Over three hundred students have been trained and the centre has integrated ICT components into several courses. Teachers are using the internet to enhance content (for instance by accessing diagrams of engines using Google Images instead of drawing on the blackboard). Hand-outs are being produced quickly and existing lesson plans are now being stored and re-used. In 2007 a recording studio is started, where the local youth can record songs on CD.

Organic Producers and Processors Association of Zambia (OPPAZ) - Integrating ICT for Quality Assurance and Marketing

Project description: http://www.iicd.org/projects/zambia-oppaz

Image The Integrating ICT for Quality Assurance and Marketing project helps to build an internal control system for the inspectors of Organic Producers and Processors Association of Zambia (OPPAZ). The project is supported by IICD since 2006. With the open source database the inspectors are able to collect the necessary data (plot data, crop type, crop produce) on a handheld computer. OPPAZ assists around 700 farmers to obtain international certification. The system will be tested at three pilot sites (Chongwe, Mongu and Mpongwe). The data collected will also be published on the internet. This publication can be viewed by international partners who would like to buy the produce of the member farmers. The system has therefore a double function as internal control system and as marketing tool.

Opensource Zambia Initiative

The Open-source Zambia Initaitive (OSZi)is a group of people, enthusiastic about free/libre/open-source software (FLOSS). FLOSS is software that is sometimes available at no charge and most importantly it is software that gives freedom to view and modify the source code. It is often high quality software that (most importantly) is developed by a community rather than one company

They are a registered organisation, supported by IICD. OSZi had developed a database for the Organic Producers and Processors Association Zambia (OPPAZ), an Integrated ICT for Quality Assurance and Marketing system. IICD has asked OSZi also to assist the Zambian Blood Transfusion Services (ZNBTS) with the development of an Integrated Blood Donor Data Base Management System and the Caritas Catholic Docese of Mongu with an integrated patient information system.OSZi has been recognized by the Zambian Government and was requested to participate in the implementation of the ICT policy, and precisely affect benefits of Free Opensource Software (FOSS) in government.OSZi does not work solely for IICD projects. To sustain the organisation they will also take up other assignements
